Local student awarded $20,000 Alumni Scholarship

The Carolina Alumni Association has announced the names of 17 recipients for its $20,000 Alumni scholarships to attend the University of South Carolina Columbia this fall.

The Alumni scholarship is among the most prestigious at the University of South Carolina. These incoming freshmen will receive $5,000 per year for four years of study to apply toward tuition. All of the students have been accepted into the university's South Carolina Honors College.

"The Alumni Association is thrilled to welcome the most academically superior class of scholars in the history of this program," said Marsha Cole, executive director of the Carolina Alumni Association. "We congratulate them and their families on this honor and thank the members of the Alumni Association for making these awards possible."

This year's class of scholars, which includes two high-school valedictorians, has an average SAT score of 1420, the highest score in the history of the scholarship program.

The scholarship winners include 14 students from South Carolina and one each from Wisconsin, Delaware and North Carolina. As an added bonus, out-of-state recipients receive resident tuition rates.

Alumni scholarships are sponsored by the Carolina Alumni Association and funded through contributions by its members. These 17 scholarship recipients will join more than 400 students in 2007 - 08 who receive scholarships through the Carolina Alumni Association. Since 1980, the association has awarded more than $8 million in direct scholarship support to some of the university's best and brightest students.
