University to host students for Duke TIP Scholar Weekend March 3 - 4

The University of South Carolina will hold its first Duke University TIP Scholar Weekend March 3 - 4 for more than 50 academically gifted middle- and high-school students.

The program is designed to give students in grades 8 - 11 the opportunity to take short, intriguing courses on academic topics that might not be available in local schools. The courses offered in this session – nanotechnology, China in the global marketplace and artists and cadavers – have been developed by the South Carolina Honors College.

The weekend is the result of a recent partnership between the university and the Duke Talented Identification Program, established in 1980 to identify academically gifted students and provide enriching programs for their education. Carolina is the only college or university in the Palmetto State to offer the Duke TIP Scholar Weekend.

"The university's first scholar weekend promises to give students a glimpse into the exciting courses that they would take at Carolina," said Dr. Davis Baird, dean of South Carolina Honors College. "They also will tour the campus and talk with some of the university's top professors. This exceptional opportunity is one of several academic programs that the university has for middle- and high-school students."

The university's Office of Academic Enrichment and Conferences is coordinating the event. The next Duke TIP Scholar Weekend is planned for October.
