Eleven schools make SIC honor roll, will compete for Riley Award

Eleven South Carolina schools have made the School Improvement Council Honor Roll, the state SIC Board of Trustees announced recently.

Those schools are now eligible for the Dick and Tunkey Riley School Improvement Award.

Honor roll schools include the following:

Chukker Creek Elementary School, Aiken County; J. Paul Truluck Middle School, Florence District Three; Pineview Elementary, Lexington District Two; Bradley Elementary, Richland One; E.L. Wright Middle, Richland Two; South Pointe High, Rock Hill Three; Pine Street Elementary, Spartanburg Seven; Wilder Elementary, Sumter 17; and, from the Greenville County School District, Brushy Creek Elementary, Taylors Elementary and Wade Hampton High.

Judges evaluated case statements written by applicants for the Riley Award, which is presented annually to a single school in recognition of its achievements in engaging the public in the improvement of its local school. Five school improvement councils will be chosen from among the Honor Roll recipients as finalists for the Riley Award. An independent panel of judges will choose the winner, which will be announced March 10 by the Rileys during a special awards luncheon in Columbia.

Created by the state General Assembly in 1977, school improvement councils engage parents, educators, students and community members in public education. More than 16,500 citizens statewide are SIC members. The SC-SIC office, located in the College of Education at the University of South Carolina, provides information, resources, training and technical assistance to schools statewide.
