McKissick Museum to ‘Spring for Art’ March 28
The University of South Carolina’s McKissick Museum will hold its 14th annual spring gala, “Spring for Art,” from 7:30 - 10 p.m. Friday, March 28.
“Spring for Art” will provide an opportunity for the public to meet local artists. The gala features more than 50 native South Carolina artists or artists who have strong ties to the state. Featured artists include Ann Baker, Steven Chesley, Tyrone Geter, Peter Lenzo, Susan Klein, Lee Malerich, Virginia Scotchie, Laura Spong and Don Zurlo. Works by all of the artists will be available for purchase at the gala, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the museum. The event also will feature food, drink and music, by the Vista Classic Jazz Band.
The spring gala, coordinated by McKissick’s Advisory Council, is one of two fundraisers held by the museum each year to support museum acquisitions and public programs. Last year’s gala contributed $15,000 to the museum. This year’s goal is $25,000.
“The gala is a fun evening that supports the museum’s serious business of caring for the important collections that the university has acquired over its 200-year history,” said Lynn Robertson, McKissick director. “They represent an unmatched resource for understanding much of the state’s history and culture. They also serve as the basis for teaching, research and public programs throughout the year.”
Tickets are $55 per person or $100 per couple. Contact the museum office at 803-777-7251 to purchase tickets.
The gala also will kick off the “Spring for Art” exhibit, an invitational exhibit and art sale running from March 28 to May 3. The exhibit will feature works by local and regional artists and will play upon the spring theme.
McKissick is the only Columbia museum to offer free regular admission. Located on the university’s historic Horseshoe, the museum features two permanent exhibitions and a number of rotating temporary exhibits and provides educational and cultural programming. Many of McKissick’s offerings are available through grants and private funding.
McKissick is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays and holidays.
