School of Music to host Moveable Musical Feast March 28
The Moveable Musical Feast will return to the School of Music on March 28, after being held at outside venues for the past four years.
The feast, sponsored by The Friends of the School of Music, is dedicated to raising scholarship dollars for music students at the university. The gala begins at 7 p.m. and features extensive hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, a silent auction and an array of performances by both School of Music faculty and students.
“The Friends of the School of Music and the school itself are delighted to present the 2008 Moveable Musical Feast,” said Dean Tayloe Harding. “This annual event has evolved over the years into its current format of delicious food, entertaining music and great fellowship on behalf of raising money necessary to offer competitive scholarships to music students at the University of South Carolina.”
The Moveable Musical Feast is a rare opportunity to see the talented students and faculty of the music school performing in one program. Tickets are $100, with $75 from each purchase going to the School of Music scholarship fund. Approximately 75 percent of all School of Music students attend the university on scholarship. To purchase tickets, call Jesseca Smith at 803-576-5763. Only 200 tickets are available.
The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with a reception, complete with food, cocktails and entertainment. The silent auction also will take place during this time. Guests can bid on a number of items, including stays at vacation homes and musical performances for their own private parties.
The formal music program will begin in the School of Music recital hall at 8:30 p.m. Faculty performances include Craig Butterfield, double bass; Bill Terwilliger, violin; and Bert Ligon and the faculty jazz combo. The well-known faculty piano duo of Marina Lomazov and Joseph Rackers also will perform. The program will conclude with a performance by the University Chorus directed by Carol Krueger and solo performances by students.
When the event began, guests would move from room to room in intimate groupings to hear performances; thus, the name, Moveable Musical Feast. However, as the program grew in popularity, it became necessary to adopt the current recital hall style to ensure that guests are able to enjoy all of the performances.
The Friends of the School of Music is a group of citizens who appreciate music and value the school’s contribution to education and to the community. Founded in 1992, they are committed to creating scholarships for worthy students and encouraging community participation in the university’s musical events.
