University welcomes students to campus
More than 6,850 students moved into residence halls at the University of South Carolina this weekend.
After unpacking bags, students headed to Williams-Brice Stadium for First Night Carolina, a university tradition where freshmen run through a fog-filled tunnel to the music of “2001” and take the field for a pep-rally to ring in the academic year.
Sunday’s agenda included individual college gatherings, followed by Convocation in Carolina Coliseum. New students were greeted by President and Mrs. Pastides and learned about the Carolinian Creed and the expectations for their success as university students.
On Monday, first-year students will gather in the morning for a lecture and group discussion about the First-Year Reading Experience book that they read his summer, “Never Let Me Go,” by writer Kazuo Ishiguro. The reading assignment and subsequent discussion gives freshmen their first academic experience at the university.
