University welcomes Carolina, McNair scholars
Fifty-nine of the nation’s top scholars have joined the University of South Carolina’s 2008 freshman class and enrolled in South Carolina Honors College.
The students have received scholarships through the Carolina and McNair scholar programs – the university’s most prestigious and valuable scholarships. The Carolina scholars program, begun in 1969, is for in-state students. The McNair program, which is for out-of-state students, was established in 1998 with a $20 million gift from USC alumnus Robert McNair and his wife Janice. Earlier this year, the McNair program was increased by $10 million.
The scholars have an average SAT of nearly 1500 and represent 13 states.
“The Carolina and McNair scholarships have been integral to the success of South Carolina Honors College over the past 30 years,” said Dr. Davis Baird, honors college dean. “The Carolina scholar program was the first of its kind for the Palmetto State. The addition of the McNair program ensures that South Carolina Honors College is attracting many of the state and nation’s top students, and they have helped to transform the university’s academic environment.”
