Trio of music faculty to perform March 31

A trio of University of South Carolina music faculty members will perform works for soprano, clarinet and piano March 31 at the School of Music recital hall.

The 7:30 p.m. concert is free and open to the public.

Tina Stallard (soprano), Lynn Kompass (piano) and Joseph Eller (clarinet) will perform works that span four centuries, including compositions by Bach, Schubert, Vaughan Williams, Leoš Janácek, Ned Rorem and Lee Hoiby.

Stallard said the trio deliberately chose to avoid compositions written for three parts that are commonly heard, such as Schubert’s “The Shepherd on the Rock.” Instead, they have assembled a varied program, taking the audience on a journey through musical history and different cultures.

A concert artist, Stallard has performed solos in works such as Brahms’ “Ein Deutsches Requiem,” Haydn’s “The Creation,” Bach’s “St. John Passion,” Poulenc’s “Gloria” and Handel’s “Messiah.” She has performed with chamber and philharmonic orchestras throughout the country. As part of the cultural prelude to the 2008 Summer Olympics, she performed the soprano solos in Vivaldi’s “Gloria” with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and members of the Beijing National Ballet Orchestra.

Eller joined the university’s faculty in 2005. He has performed in concert halls throughout North America, Europe and Japan. His 2008 recital tour of the Czech Republic included a performance in Prague of the Mozart Clarinet Quintet with the Bennewitz String Quartet. He has been invited to perform a solo recital at the 2009 China International Clarinet /Saxophone Festival.

Kompass, a pianist and associate professor of voice, has performed for five summers at the prestigious Steans Vocal Institute in residence at the Ravinia Music Festival, working with conductor Christoph Eschenbach and many famed singers. She has performed in recital in New York City’s Weill Recital Hall and the Nicolas Roerich Museum, as well as at festivals and chamber music series in Colorado and in the Carolinas.
