School of Music to present a night of cello

The University of South Carolina’s School of Music will feature virtuoso cellist Selma Gokcen at 3p.m. March 29 in the school’s recital hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Gokcen will perform “A Concert of Solo Cello Suites: J.S. Bach and Gaspar Cassadó,” which includes two suites by the 18th-century composer, Bach, and a solo sonata by the 20th-century Spanish-Catalan composer Cassadó.

The next day, she will conduct a master class for university cello students.

Gokcen, American born and of Turkish descent, is an accomplished chamber musician who has performed at the Chamber Music West Festival in San Francisco, the Southeastern Music Festival, the Hindemith Festival in Oregon, and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena.

“Selma Gokcen is a wonderful, communicative cellist with superb technique and command of the instrument,” said fellow cellist and Carolina Distinguished Professor of Music Dr. Robert Jesselson.

Gokcen resides in London, England, and is a faculty member at the Guildhall.
