Professor wins prestigious award for book on Southern writers

University of South Carolina professor Dr. Robert Brinkmeyer is the 2008 winner of the prestigious Brooks-Warren Award for Outstanding Literary Criticism for his book, “The Fourth Ghost: White Southern Writers and European Fascism, 1930-1950.” The book was released by LSU Press last year.

Brinkmeyer is professor of English and Southern Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. The jury chose Brinkmeyer’s book for its “clearly superior scholarship, breadth of content and authoritative style.”

Brinkmeyer teaches and writes about 20th-century Southern literature, contemporary Southern literature and culture and the literature of the West and Westerns. His books include “Remapping Southern Literature: Contemporary Southern Writers and the West,” “Katherine Anne Porter’s Artistic Development: Primitivism, Traditionalism, and Totalitarianism” and “The Art and Vision of Flannery O’Connor.”
