Where they've landed ...
A look at some of the members of the Class of 2007, where they've been, and where they're going.
Name: Lindsay Stark
Hometown: Charleston
High School: West Ashley High School
Major: Elementary education
College was all about change for Lindsay Stark: change of majors, change of career plans, change of name.
Entering the University of South Carolina as Lindsay Pearson, the Charleston native became Lindsay Stark when she married her fourth-grade sweetheart her sophomore year. Along the way, she realized she had been resisting what would become another love in her life: teaching.
"When I realized I was learning psychology to teach it, it was a real eye opener," she said. "I had always fought being a teacher, but after that first year, I realized it was a passion."
Stark actually began her college career as a theater major, then moved to psychology. Not until that first-year psychology class, however, did she change her major one more time – and this time for
good – to elementary education.
And with that decision, she flourished. Upon May graduation, Stark will embark on a teaching career that will begin at Summerville's Newington Elementary School, where she will teach second grade.
Lee Johnson, the clinical instructor at the university's College of Education who supervised Stark's student-teacher training, gave Stark her highest praise.
"In my 22 years of teaching, 15 of them mentoring, I have had some good interns, some excellent interns, but never have I seen one master the art of teaching like Lindsay," she said. "If her age didn't give her away, you would swear she was a veteran of 10 years."
Johnson likewise had a profound impact on Stark's path toward becoming a teacher.
"She was very supportive, very diplomatic," Stark said. "She made the process a lot easier. When I was feeling stressed, I could talk to her.
"As far as the College of Education, the faculty were more supportive and personable than I imagined they would be. They were very willing to help you with anything you needed."
