Where they've landed ...
A look at some of the members of the Class of 2007, where they've been, and where they're going.
Jessica Wilson

Name: Jessica Wilson
Hometown: Lexington
High School: Lexington High School
Major: music education

A year ago, Jessica Wilson would have been terrified of moving to Allentown, Pa., to become the associate director of the U.S. Scholarship Band Association. As she prepares to graduate this weekend, all of that has changed.

"Everything in life has a time," Wilson said. "In the fall, I was terrified of graduating. I even thought about hiding out in graduate school. But then I did my semester of student teaching, and a calm came over me. I realized that I was prepared for the real world. I'm not afraid to be an adult now. USC has helped me develop my sense of independence and confidence. I'm ready to soar."

At the U.S. Scholarship Band Association, Wilson will work with 800 high-school marching bands around the country and help coordinate band clinics and competitions in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma and her home state South Carolina.

Wilson chose the University of South Carolina because of the reputation of its School of Music and the school's faculty and ensembles. While at the university, she performed with the concert and marching bands and was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity. She says music faculty members Dr. Julie Hubbard and Dr. Donna Shin challenged and encouraged her, expanding her understanding of music history and reigniting her love for the flute.

Although music was her focus, Wilson took advantage of the academic offerings of a large university.

"I took statistics, chemistry and psychology during the summer. I loved the variety of taking math and science in combination with music theory and music history," said Wilson who encourages other students to do the same. "Take as many courses that interest you as possible. Add those extra classes because you have the opportunity."

Wilson is excited about all the "great things happening at the university."

"I've really seen the university grow these past four years," said Wilson. "I think the Strom Thurmond Center is the best place in the whole world. The new research things going on and the new baseball stadium are very exciting."

What will Wilson miss? The atmosphere of the university.

"I love the Horseshoe and the flowers in the spring. I love walking back and forth from Gambrell Hall to the School of Music and seeing people sitting on the Horseshoe and or watching people in the music library listen to music and being around people who want to learn, which is powerful."
