Local author teams up with university in literacy effort
The University’s South Carolina Center for Children's Books and Literacy, which develops best practices for stimulating reading in South Carolina, has teamed up with local children’s author, Monica Simmons, to promote literacy by giving 1,350 copies of Simmons’ book “Midlands Child” to students in Richland District One schools on Friday, Dec. 14. The project offers local media good visual and story opportunities.
The literacy effort aims to encourage children to read during the holidays and to foster a continued interest in reading. Simmons will address the student body and staff of Gadsden Elementary at 9 a.m., with stops also planned at A.C. Moore and Lewis-Greenview elementary schools.
In 2005, the university’s School of Library and Information Science launched the Children, Libraries and Literacy Initiative, a $6 million campaign to eliminate illiteracy across South Carolina. The South Carolina Center for Children’s Books and Literacy, under the direction of Ellen Shuler, directs many of the school’s literacy efforts.
To coordinate coverage of the Dec. 14 literacy event, call Peggy Binette at 803-777-5400 or Karen York, Richland District One, at 803-231-7504.
