University hosts first conference on international Secession

Ask any Southerner, and he’ll tell you that secession means one thing: the American Civil War. But the American South isn’t the only region to attempt severing ties with a country.

Southern secession and numerous international examples of secession will be discussed at a conference sponsored by the University of South Carolina for scholars and the public Dec. 6 – 8 in Charleston at the Embassy Suites Historic Charleston. Titled “Secession as an International Phenomenon,” the conference will take place just days shy of the 147th anniversary of South Carolina’s vote to secede from the United States of America, a move that culminated in the American Civil War.

To arrange coverage, call Peggy Binette at 803-777-5400.

University celebrates 200th anniversary of first commencement

The University of South Carolina will celebrate the 200th anniversary of its first commencement with two public events. The first will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the Newberry Opera House. The theatrical program, “Starting from Five,” honors the first five graduates of South Carolina College, all of whom hailed from Mount Bethel Academy in Newberry County. More than 250 of their descendants have been invited to the event. The program, a historical commemoration of Carolina’s first commencement in 1807, will feature period music and dress and oration in Latin and Greek, which was typical of the early ceremonies. A second presentation will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, in Rutledge College chapel on the university Horseshoe, site of the first commencement. University historian Dr. Walter Edgar will host the events at Newberry and Rutledge Chapel.

To coordinate coverage, call Peggy Binette or Margaret Lamb at 803-777-5400.
