Students to turn stories into animated films


The College of Mass Communications and Information Studies is continuing its observance of National Children’s Book Week with an animation workshop Wednesday, Nov. 14. Students in grades 4 – 6 from Logan, Brennan and Meadowfield elementary schools and Epworth Children’s Home will learn about the art of storytelling and stop-motion animation from award-winning children’s author and animation expert Joe Summerhays, with assistance from university faculty.

The workshop offers excellent visual and reporting opportunities. Visual opportunities include 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Wednesday when students will make their stories into animated films. The films will be screened from 2 – 4 p.m. The workshop will take place in the Frank McGuire Room in the Basketball Practice Facility, located next to the Carolina Coliseum.

Summerhays has written 35 children’s books and designed more than 70 award-winning children’s software titles, many of which have won top awards.

New lab features high-tech equipment for genetic studies


The University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health will have tours from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, of a laboratory that has some of the newest and most high-tech equipment for genetic and genomic studies. Dr. Joseph Jones, director of the Environmental Genomics Core Facility, will be available to discuss the types of research that can be conducted in the lab and what it will mean for research at Carolina and other universities. The lab is located in the Public Health Research Center building at 921 Assembly St.

Sport-entertainment conference attracts top industry leaders


Some of the nation’s top sport and entertainment industry leaders will be in Columbia Thursday, Nov.15, through Saturday, Nov. 17, for the University of South Carolina’s conference on sport and entertainment. Sponsored by the department of sport and entertainment management, the conference will take place at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

An awards program, Friday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m.will honor legendary football coach Willie Jeffries of South Carolina State University, who will receive the Pioneer Award, and Kenneth Feld, chairman and chief executive officer of Feld Entertainment, Inc. Feld will receive the Outstanding Corporate Partner Award.
