Scientist to discuss comet theory Oct. 10
Dr. Allen West, whose research rocked science circles this summer, will speak Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the University of South Carolina to discuss his theory that a massive comet nearly 13,000 years ago wiped out man and beast, including, perhaps, the Clovis culture in South Carolina. West will speak at 3 p.m. in Room 011 of Calcott, located behind Russell House on South Bull Street.
The lecture will detail how West, along with university archaeologist Dr. Al Goodyear and 25 other scientists from 18 institutions, worked to uncover one of the world’s greatest catastrophes that pushed the earth into another ice age.
Goodyear is known for his excavations at the Topper site in Allendale County. West and Goodyear’s research recently was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (www.pnas.org). The comet research also was the subject of a National Geographic television special Oct. 7, and the History Channel and SC-ETV filmed at Topper Oct. 8 – 9 for documentary projects.
To interview West and Goodyear, call Peggy Binette at 803-777-5400.
