University students welcome parents for annual Parents Weekend


University of South Carolina students and parents will celebrate Parents Weekend, Oct. 19 – 21. A record number of parents and family members (2,200) from 36 states will attend the weekend’s events, many of which offer broadcast and print media good visual and story opportunities.

On Friday, a welcome reception will be held at the President’s House from 5 – 6 p.m. and Beach Bash at the outdoor pool area of the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center will be from 8 – 11 p.m. Carolina mascot Cocky will join the beach fun from 8 – 9:30 p.m.

On Saturday, parents and students will enjoy a Carolina tailgate at the practice field on Bluff Road from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The tailgate will feature the university’s marching band, Cocky and President Sorensen.

20th annual S.C. Archaeology Day in Historic Brattonsville Oct. 20


The 20th annual S.C. Archaeology Day will be held Saturday, Oct. 20 in Historic Brattonsville. The theme of this year’s event is “Foodways: A Taste of Archaeology: How Food Has Influenced the Achaeological Record.”

The event, which is highly visual and offers media many photo opportunities, will feature demonstrations of how early settlers gathered and cooked food. Children will have the chance to participate in an archaeological dig, brick making, rope turning, corn shucking and grinding and cooking in clay pots.
