Top students landing at USC for weekend of classes

Football isn’t the only activity attracting visitors to the University of South Carolina. Top students in grades 8 – 11 will be at Carolina Saturday, Oct. 27, and Sunday, Oct. 28, for the Duke University TIP weekend.

The event offers courses on polar climates, China in the global marketplace, finding the voice of writing and improvisation for non-jazz players. Classes begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and continue through 8 p.m.

For more information on Friday, call USC’s Office of Media Relations at 803-777-5400.

*** Over the weekend, media can call Cindy Lupkey at 803-319-9866 or 803-603-3344.

ATTENTION ...... Metro, Weekend and Broadcast editors:
Mayor Coble to honor Stephen Colbert on Horseshoe

Native Son Stephen Colbert, who has declared his trans-party candidacy for president of the United States, will be honored Sunday (Oct. 28) by Mayor Bob Coble with the key to the city and a proclamation declaring him South Carolina’s favorite son. The event will take place at 9 a.m. on the university’s historic Horseshoe.

Colbert, a Charleston native who hosts “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central, announced earlier this month on his show that we was running for president and would campaign only in South Carolina. The announcement coincides with the publication of his book, “I Am America, and So Can You.”

In his appearances and on his show, Colbert has talked up South Carolina, especially its barbecue and peaches.

For more information, call Margaret Lamb at 803.777.5400 or Mayor Bob Coble at 803-315-4123.
