First book by an African American comes to University, Web
An important piece of African-American history has found a new home at the University of South. The university’s Thomas Cooper Library has acquired a first edition of Phillis Wheatley’s “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral” (London, 1773), the first book published by an African-American author, and has made the book available on the Web for students in grades 6 – 12 and college to access and use.
The book is the first copy of Wheatley’s “Poems” on record for any library in South Carolina. The university’s library also is the first library to make a free-accessible and fully-searchable digital copy of the book available online at the Web site: www.sc.edu/library/spcoll/wheatley/wheatleyp.html
Reporters will have the opportunity to see the Wheatley book and interview Dr. Patrick Scott, director of rare books and special collections, about its significance in the teaching of literature and African-American history from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Graniteville Room of Thomas Cooper Library.
To coordinate coverage, call Peggy Binette or Margaret Lamb at 803-777-5400.
