Report highlights problem of obesity among rural youth
A national report by the university's S.C. Rural Health Research Center on the prevalence of overweight and obese children in rural areas will be released Friday, Sept. 14.
Dr. Jan Probst, the center's director and the lead author on the report, will be available from 10 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and after 3:15 p.m. to discuss the findings. The report is the nation's first to examine the prevalence of children being overweight, obese and physically inactive.
South Carolina leads the nation in the fewest number of children who participate in after-school sports programs or lessons and ranks sixth in the number of overweight children.

Student interest in study abroad soars; fair to be held Sept. 14
Study abroad is one of the hottest trends in higher education. Like their peers at colleges nationwide, University of South Carolina students ncreasingly are interested in study-abroad opportunities. Last year, nearly 750 Carolina students studied abroad, a 27-percent increase from the previous year's participation rate.
On Friday, Sept. 14, Carolina students will explore study abroad opportunities available to them at the university's annual Study Abroad Fair from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Russell House University Union.
Representatives from foreign universities and program providers, as well as exchange students and study-abroad participants, will answer students' questions about overseas study. From Argentina to Thailand, programs in more than 35 countries spanning six continents will be represented.
