Lucas case centerpiece of environmental-law conference


“Balancing Private & Public Rights in the Coastal Zone in the Era of Climate Change: The Fifteenth Anniversary of Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal Council,” a law conference being held at the University of South Carolina School of Law, will conclude today with a further examination of the landmark case that greatly impacted coastal development. Sessions scheduled for Friday include “State Coastal Management and the Takings Issue” (9:45 - 11 a.m.), “Alternatives to Regulation” (11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.) and “Coastal Access: The Controversy Over South Carolina’s Rice Fields” (4 - 5 p.m.).

Speakers will include some of the nation’s top legal scholars on the issues of takings, coastal development and environmental law, as well as representatives of conservation groups, law firms and state agencies.
