Carolina honors outstanding alumni at Homecoming gala Sept. 28
The Carolina Alumni Association will recognize some of the university=s most outstanding alumni tonight (Friday, Sept. 28) at its annual Homecoming gala at the Columbia Convention Center. Festivities will begin with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. followed by the awards presentation.
Honorees include former U.S. Sen. Ernest “Fritz” Hollings, longtime trustee Dr. C. Edward Floyd, Nickelodeon executive Marva Smalls, Columbia ophthalmologist Dr. Hal H. Crosswell Sr., FOX TV anchor Ainsley Earhardt McKinney, New Orleans physician Dr. Cassandra Youmans, Blue Cross Blue Shield CEO Ed Sellers, and benefactors Norman and Gerry Sue Arnold.

Sloan Center presents tourism conference September 28
Some of the nation’s top experts on tourism will attend an industry conference September 28 at the University of South Carolina. The event, “Tourism as a Catalyst for Economic Development,” is being sponsored by the university’s Alfred P. Sloan Travel and Tourism Center and will focus on tourism promotion.
Among the featured speakers will be Dr. Andy Garman, associate chair of the department of health systems management for Rush University in Chicago, who will discuss the present and future of medical travel in the tourism industry.

U.S. Commerce Secretary to speak to Moore School students
U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez will discuss the importance of leadership in the global economy with students at the Moore School of Business at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at 12:30 p.m. in Lumpkin Auditorium of the Moore School of Business. He will be accompanied by U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C).
A media availability will take place at 1 p.m. in the board room next to the auditorium. Reporters interested in covering the classroom talk or the avail can park in reserved spaces in the parking lot behind the school. Enter off Barnwell Street.
