Arnold School students to unveil recycling program April 1


Graduate students in Dr. Daniela Friedman’s health communications class at the Arnold School of Public Health will unveil a recycling campaign for the community and university during a 5 – 7 p.m. reception Tuesday, April 1, at the State Museum. The reception is part of the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control’s observance of Public Health Month in South Carolina.

The students received a $2,000 grant from the Associations of School of Public Health for the campaign, “This Is Public Health,” from April 7 – 13.

Creator of winning Super Bowl ad to claim Cocky Award April 1


Michael Boulia, senior vice president and creative director for BBDO New York, will claim the University of South Carolina’s Cocky Award for best Super Bowl commercial at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, in the campus room of Capstone House. Boulia will accept the Cocky Award and will give a public talk about the creation of the winning commercial.

Students in Dr. Bonnie Drewniany’s honors college course on Super Bowl advertising host an annual Ad Bowl to rate Super Bowl commercials. The Cocky Award for the overall winning commercial has earned a certain cache in the advertising industry, each year bringing top ad creators to campus. The lecture and award ceremony are part of the I-Comm Week, which brings communications professionals to campus to address students.

The University of South Carolina will honor the achievements of its graduate students during Graduate Student Day on Wednesday, April 2. Scientific posters, the arts and creative performances will be judged beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Russell House, third floor. University President Andrew Sorensen and Dr. Harris Pastides, vice president for research and health sciences, will present awards at 1:45 p.m., including the prestigious Graduate Assistant Teaching award.
