The University of South Carolina will honor the achievements of its graduate students during Graduate Student Day on Wednesday, April 2. Scientific posters, the arts and creative performances will be judged beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Russell House, third floor. University President Andrew Sorensen and Dr. Harris Pastides, vice president for research and health sciences, will present awards at 1:45 p.m., including the prestigious Graduate Assistant Teaching award.

Civil rights pioneer can discuss 40th anniversary of Dr. King’s death
Friday, April 4, marks the 40th anniversary of the death of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Civil rights pioneer and University of South Carolina historian Dr. Cleveland Sellers is available Wednesday, April 2, through Friday, April 4, to discuss the important milestone with media. Sellers can discuss the similar call for action made by Dr. King in his March on Washington speech “The Fierce Urgency of Now” to presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s recent speech “Race in America” and the growing need to address race and poverty in the United States. Sellers also can talk about the relevance of the central themes of King’s work – truth, justice, equality and peace – in today’s world.

C-SPAN CEO to address journalism students, faculty, alumni April 3
Brian Lamb, C-SPAN CEO and chairman, will give the keynote address for the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, which is celebrating the fifth anniversary of I-Comm Week, at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the law school auditorium. Lamb is among a impressive array of professionals from the communications industry who are participating in I-Comm week that continues through Friday, April 4. USC to open Garibaldi conference, exhibit with lecture April 3
“Heading to Garibaldis” takes on new meaning this week at the University of South Carolina. Giuseppi Garibaldi will be the focus of a public lecture, exhibition and conference that gets under way Thursday, April 3.
Home to the one of the world’s foremost research Garibaldi collections, the university will celebrate the birth of the famous Italian patriot and revolutionist who inspired Civil War Gen. Wade Hampton and his “Red Shirts.” The event will begin with a public lecture by University of London scholar Dr. Lucy Riall at 5 p.m. on the mezzanine level of Thomas Cooper Library. An exhibit, “Garibaldi in His Time,” also will be on display and will feature highlights from the university’s Anthony P. Campanella Collection, the most extensive collection about Garibaldi outside of Italy. The “Garibaldi Abroad” conference runs through Saturday, April 5.
