‘Do it in the Dark!’ Students to celebrate Earth Day April 22

Students living in Green (West) Quad, the university’s green residence hall community, will host “Do it in the Dark!” Tuesday, April 22, to celebrate Earth Day and bring attention to global climate change. The campus event will be held from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. in the courtyard of the Green Quad, located at Sumter and Wheat streets.

Using little to no electricity, the event will feature live music. Students will get glow-in-the-dark memorabilia and organic T-shirts and will have the chance to take test drives on Segways and a 2008 Prius from Jim Hudson Toyota.

The event offers local media good visual opportunities.

To coordinate coverage, call Peggy Binette at 803-777-5400.

Earth Day expert can discuss Texas-sized trash field in Pacific

Pat DeMouy, who teaches management, energy and environmental sustainability at the Moore School of Business, can discuss a little known problem the size of Texas floating in the North Pacific Ocean. DeMouy can detail for reporters how a trash field of plastics and pollution – larger than the state of Texas -- has collected in a region of the Pacific Ocean as a result of water current patterns and little wind movement. DeMouy says Earth Day is the perfect time to talk about the trash field and to discuss whether something similar could happen in other oceans.

To interview DeMouy, call Peggy Binette at 803-777-5400.
