Annual Garnet Jacket Classic in full swing April 24 - 25


The Garnet Jacket Classic, hosted by the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management, brings industry leaders, educators and alumni together in friendly competition to raise money for scholarships and assistanceships for academically gifted students and support for faculty research. The event will take place at Cobblestone Park, home to the university’s men’s and women’s golf teams.

A reception will be held at McCutchen House at 7 p.m. Thursday. Apr. 24. The Classic will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 25.

University of South Carolina political experts are available to discuss the results of the hotly contested Pennsylvania primary and the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination, which frontrunner U.S. Sen. Barack Obama hasn’t been able to wrap up.

Chemistry professor to testify before Congress about nano research


Dr. Lee Ferguson, a faculty member in the university’s department of chemistry and biochemistry, will testify Thursday, April 24, before Congress about the future of nanotechnology research. His remarks, scheduled from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m., are part of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, a federal program begun in 2001 to coordinate nanotechnology research and development.

Ferguson, who will discuss the impact of nanotechnology on health and the environment, will be available Wednesday and Thursday for interviews. To arrange interviews, call Karen Petit at 803-777-5400.
