Metro, Business and Sports editors: Annual Garnet Jacket Classic in full swing April 24 - 25 The Garnet Jacket Classic, hosted by the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management, brings industry leaders, educators and alumni together in friendly competition to raise money for scholarships and assistantships for academically gifted students and support for faculty research. The event will take place at Cobblestone Park, home to the university’s men’s and women’s golf teams. A reception will be held at McCutchen House at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24. The classic will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 25.

ATTENTION ...... Metro, Education, Business, Broadcast Editors: Chemistry professor to testify before Congress about nano research Dr. Lee Ferguson, a faculty member in the university’s department of chemistry and biochemistry, will testify Thursday, April 24, before Congress about the future of nanotechnology research. His remarks, scheduled from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m., are part of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, a federal program begun in 2001 to coordinate nanotechnology research and development.
Ferguson, who will discuss the impact of nanotechnology on health and the environment, will be available Thursday for interviews. To arrange interviews, call Karen Petit at 803-777-5400.
ATTENTION ...... Metro, Health and Broadcast Editors: University to hold inaugural Clyburn Health Disparities Lecture Dr. Lovell Jones, director of the Center for Research on Minority Health at the University of Texas, will be the featured speaker Friday, April 25, for the inaugural James E. Clyburn Health Disparities Lecture at the University of South Carolina. The program, which is open to the public, will take place at 9 a.m. in the auditorium of the Public Health Research Center of the Arnold School of Public Health, located at 921 Assembly St. A reception is planned immediately afterward in the atrium. Jones is the founding co-chair of the Intercultural Cancer Council, the nation’s largest multicultural health-policy group, which focuses on minorities, the medically underserved and cancer. The Arnold School is naming April 25 James E. Clyburn Day at the school. Clyburn will be available to meet with media from 11 – 11:45 a.m.

ATTENTION ...... Metro, Education and Broadcast editors: S.C. librarians, teachers to discuss need for Latino children’s books In an effort to encourage literacy in the Latino community, South Carolina librarians, K-12, pre-service and ESL teachers and school administrators will meet Saturday, April 26, for the first time to discuss the need for more and better literature reflecting Hispanic culture. The University of South Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science and College of Education have organized the inaugural Celebration of Latino Children’s Literature Conference. More than 275 people are expected to attend the event. The conference offers print and broadcast media an excellent opportunity to report on the educational needs of Latino children in South Carolina. The conference will include a public event Friday, April 25. Yuyi Morales, an award-winning Latina artist and children’s author, will perform puppetry and storytelling at 6:30 p.m. at the Lexington Main Library. Children will receive a free copy of one of Morales’ books. The event offers excellent visuals. Dr. Jaime Naidoo, a Latino children’s literature expert in the university’s School of Library and Information Science, will be available at the Friday event and Saturday conference for interviews.
