Political expert says governor’s post good training for White House

Who says the governor’s office isn’t fertile training ground for the White House? Lucas McMillan, a doctoral candidate at the University of South Carolina, has done extensive research on the role of governors in foreign relations, including economic development, international trade and foreign investments. McMillan studied the governors of 14 states between the 1995 and 2004 and interviewed four from South Carolina, including Gov. Mark Sanford and former governors Jim Hodges, Dick Riley and the late Bob McNair. McMillan found that governors increasingly were meeting with heads of state, taking positions on border security issues and becoming more involved in international matters, all of which help build résumés for national public office, including the presidency. He will be available 10 – 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, to discuss his work.

To arrange an interview, call Peggy Binette or Margaret Lamb at 803-777-5400.
