High-school students taking white-coat adventures June 11 - 12
High-school students from around the state are at the University of South Carolina this week for a white-coat adventure into the worlds of pharmacy and medicine as part of the Carolina Master Scholars Adventure Series. The camp, which runs through Friday, June 13, offers great story and visual opportunities. Lab sessions from 1:15 – 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, and Thursday, June 12 are particularly visual.
Adventures in Pharmacy: Students will prepare hospital IVs on Wednesday and learn the essentials about diabetes on Thursday, including how to take a blood-pressure reading and assess sugar levels.
Adventures in Medicine: Students will dissect the thoracic cavity and heart on Wednesday and the brain and spinal cord on Thursday.
Carolina Master Scholars Adventure Series camps, which run weekly through July, also include ones in journalism, law, marine science, computer gaming, culinary arts, U.S/China exchange, exercise science, writing and robotics.

Economists can discuss rising costs and economic outlook
Rising oil prices, food costs, unemployment rates and tuition have vaulted the economy to the top of Americans’ list of campaign issues. Two Moore School of Business economists are available to discuss the latest economic news and what it means for South Carolina.
Research economist Dr. Paulo Guimaraes can discuss South Carolina’s economy and how it is fairing compared with the region and nation. Guimareas compiles economic forecasting data for South Carolina. Economics professor Dr. Jan Breuer, an expert in currency crises, financial crises and macroeconomics, can discuss exchange rates, interest rates, monetary policy, inflation and recession.
