The mark of a great university is that on any given day the public is invited to be entertained, inspired or enlightened by an array of offerings. This week, the University of South Carolina is teeming with activity. Here’s a sample of what’s happening this week, each offering story opportunities to broadcast and print media.

Business leaders and university alumni will meet Dr. Hildy Teegen from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at the City Club of Rock Hill and learn about the new strategic direction of the Moore School of Business.
Writer Joyce Carol Oates will read from and discuss her book, “The Falls,” Wednesday, March 19, at 5:45 p.m. in the Belk Auditorium of the Moore School of Business. Her appearance is part of the popular student-community course, “Caught in the Creative Act.”
Dr. David D. Ho, Time magazine’s 1996 Man of the Year for his groundbreaking research on AIDS will deliver the 2008 Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Lecture at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 19 in the School of Law auditorium.
Candidates for Columbia City Council will participate in “Green Talk,” a University of South Carolina forum to discuss important environmental and conservation topics facing Columbia, Wednesday, March 19, in the Green Quad Learning Center for Sustainable Futures.
More than 30 descendants of Civil War soldier William Sidney Mullins will present President Andrew Sorensen with a letter written by Mullins on Aug. 6, 1861, that captures the gory details of the battle of First Manasses (also known as the Battle of Bull Run). The family will make the presentation at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20 at the South Caroliniana Library. The Mullins family members hail from throughout South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.
