ATTENTION ...... Metro, Features and Health editors: Time magazine’s 1996 Man of the Year to deliver J&J lecture Dr. David D. Ho, Time magazine’s 1996 Man of the Year for his groundbreaking research on AIDS, will be available to the media at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, prior to his delivering the 2008 Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Lecture at the University of South Carolina’s School of Law. The media availability will be held in Room 302 of the law school. Ho’s 5 p.m. lecture, to be held in the law auditorium, will focus on the AIDS epidemic and the ethical dilemma of providing treatment locally and globally.

ATTENTION ...... Broadcast editors: Satellite feed at 2 p.m. features colon cancer research, survivor March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to prevention, screening and research. Dr. Jim Carson, a researcher in the department of exercise science at the Arnold School of Public Health, studies colon cancer and cachexia, a physical “wasting” in which people lose weight or experience muscle atrophy and fatigue. The condition often occurs among people with cancer. The University of South Carolina’s Office of Media Relations will have a satellite feed from 2 – 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, featuring soundbites from Carson and a colon cancer survivor.

Metro, Political and Broadcast editors: Columbia City Council candidates gather for ‘Green Talk’ March 19 Candidates for Columbia City Council will participate in “Green Talk,” a University of South Carolina forum to discuss important environmental and conservation topics facing Columbia, Wednesday, March 19, in the Green Quad Learning Center for Sustainable Futures. Candidates Belinda Gergel, Cameron Runyan and Reed Swearingen have confirmed their attendance, with other candidates expected to participate.

ATTENTION ...... Metro, Features and Broadcast editors: Mullins family to present university with valuable Civil War letter More than 30 descendants of Civil War soldier William Sidney Mullins will present President Andrew Sorensen with a letter written by Mullins on Aug. 6, 1861, that captures the gory details of the battle of First Manassas (also known as the Battle of Bull Run). The Mullins family will make the presentation at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20 at the South Caroliniana Library. The Mullins family members hail from throughout South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. A news release about the gift is online at www.sc.edu.
