University hosts “Green” Study Abroad Fair March 5

Studying abroad is an increasingly popular facet of the college experience. University of South Carolina students can study in countries ranging from Argentina to Thailand and spanning six continents. On Wednesday, March 5, environmentally minded students can learn about “green” study abroad opportunities at the university’s Green Study Abroad Fair.

The fair will take place at 7 p.m. in the Green (West) Quad Learning Center, centrally located in the building D of the “green dorm” residence hall complex.

Study abroad programs for green students include: environmental policy, Leeds, England; Permaculture at an ecovillage, Brazil; marine science in Newcastle, Australia; ecology in Bangkok, Thailand. University representatives will be on hand to answer reporters’ questions about study abroad opportunities and the Green Quad living and learning residence hall, respectively.

For more information, call Peggy Binette at 803-777-5400.

University expert can discuss colitis and link to colorectal cancer

People with ulcerative colitis appear to have a higher risk of colorectal cancer. Dr. Lorne Hofseth, a colorectal cancer researcher at the University of South Carolina, is collecting data on the role of American ginseng in the prevention and treatment of colitis.

This study is being presented at the American Association for Cancer Research annual conference in San Diego next month. Hofseth also has a study on the role of Ginkgo biloba extract in the prevention and treatment of colitis and is working with the National Cancer Institute on a colitis study.

To arrange interviews with Hofseth, call Karen Petit at 803-777-5400.
