ATTENTION ...... Metro, Broadcast Editors:
University library, Kershaw County to unveil political portraits

Kershaw County officials, in collaboration with the South Carolina Political Collections at the University of South Carolina, will unveil portraits of Gov. John West, Sen. Donald Holland and the Hon. Robert Sheehen at a 5:30 p.m. ceremony Thursday, May 22, at the Kershaw County Courthouse. In addition to celebrating the achievements of the three, the event offers excellent opportunities for broadcast and print media to report on how the university’s libraries are sharing its treasures and expertise with communities around the state.

Herb Hartsook, director of the South Carolina Political Collections, has organized an exhibit that will be on display at the Kershaw ceremony about West and Holland, whose papers are among those in the university’s library collections. The exhibit will move the next day to the Camden Archives and Museum, where it will remain on display for an indefinite time.

At the ceremony, Hartsook will present the portraits of West and Holland, while S.C. Chief Justice Jean H. Toal will present the portrait of Sheheen. Other speakers include local historian Harvey S. Teal and Sen. Vincent A. Sheheen. The Celebration Gospel Ensemble will perform.

The Kershaw county collaboration is one example of how the university is bringing the rare treasures from library collections to the people of South Carolina. Outreach efforts include an exhibition on the Harlem Renaissance that was on display earlier this spring in Sumter and current ones on Lewis and Clark in Lancaster and John James Audubon and South Carolina naturalists in Greenville. An exhibit of Ernest Hemingway will be mounted in Beaufort in July, and one on F. Scott Fitzgerald and “The Great Gatsby” will be displayed in Spartanburg this October.

To arrange interviews, call Peggy Binette or Margaret Lamb in the university’s Office of Media Relations at 803-777-5400.
